Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had conceded ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the club had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this year. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to remain there for another season. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad without replacements.

He signed in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Originally described as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
