Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
