This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
